No Way Home had a brilliant marketing campaign before spoilers ruined it

Spider-Man: No Path Home opens in theaters this weekend, although the first screenings are already underway. Some countries started playing the highly anticipated Marvel movie on Wednesday. It’s the MCU movie every Marvel fan is dying to see in large part thanks to the massive marketing campaign. We’re talking about the Holland-Maguire-Garfield speculations that have ignited the internet for most of the year. Fans of Spidey are split between two camps, those who think the former actors will make an appearance in the film and those who think it’s just wishful thinking.

Turns out Sony and Marvel had a brilliant marketing plan to No way home, which they were never able to take advantage of because of the numerous leaks. We will warn you that some spoilers might follow below. You’ll want to check out our spoiler-free Spider-Man: No Path Home review instead if you don’t want to get into spoilery things.

Great Spider Man leaks

Anyone involved in No way home had to answer the same questions about the film throughout the year. And everyone denied when asked if Maguire and Garfield were in the movie. But all this online chatter, which looked like what happened the year before the Avengers: Endgame premiere, increased fan interest in the film.

This is the basement No way home marketing campaign I was talking about. Sony and Marvel made little effort to promote the film during the second half of the year. The first trailer dropped at the end of August after it was first leaked online. Trailer 2 arrived on November 15 at a special screening. This is when the press interviews started and Sony and Marvel got started. No way home marketing for good.

By this time, however, fans were probably convinced that they needed to see the film as soon as possible. It’s also because we’ve seen a growing number of leaks since late August that confirmed the movie’s big spoilers.

Sony and Marvel have decided not to respond to the rumors. They didn’t feature Maguire or Garfield in the latest trailer or any of the many TV spots and full-stage releases. Additionally, the former Spider-Man cast did not appear on the press tour. That said, Garfield still had to field a lot of No way home questions as he promoted his other 2021 films.

Meanwhile, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, and Benedict Cumberbatch had to keep dodging Maguire-Garfield questions, sometimes with hilarious results.

The original No way home marketing plan

But it turns out that Sony and Marvel had a brilliant marketing plan to No way home. The news comes from the same Holland, who spoke to Yahoo Entertainment UK Monday, the film’s premiere on the red carpet.

“We’re pretty tired of constantly lying and cheating on people. I feel like my conscience weighs on me now. It’s tough, ”said Holland. Zendaya agreed that it would have been “exhausting” to keep all the bad guys a secret. This is the brilliant part of the initial marketing plan, however.

“Do you remember when that was the initial marketing plan? Holland asked his co-star. “The original plan was to make the movie feel like a civil war between me and Doctor Strange, and they were going to keep everything a secret. It’s impossible.”

Sony and Marvel showed Doc Ock (Alfred Molina) in the first No way home trailer and teased four other villains. We then saw the villains in full in many clips that followed. We speculated after the first trailer that the only reason Sony and Marvel showed Molina’s iconic villain was because of what the actor said earlier this year. He revealed the secret of the multiverse in an interview several months ago, explaining how Doc Ock comes back to life in No way home.

It was probably the moment that ruined the original No way home marketing campaign. Apart from the interview with Molina, all the other massifs No way home the leaks that have followed since the release of the first trailer would have crippled the marketing idea of ”civil war.”

That said, the trailers included some of that idea, showing Holland’s Strange and Peter Parker fighting on the streets of the city and then in the Mirror Dimension. We won’t spoil the conclusion of the Strange vs. Spider-Man battle. It’s safe to say this is a highlight of the movie.
